Which perspectives do you live by?
When you wake up in the morning, are you aware of your first thoughts?
“Give me coffee…”, “Where’s my phone…”, “Shit I am late for work…”, “I have a busy day today!”
In Cognitive Behavioural Therapy there is a model that basically says that if you have a thought, it will lead to an emotional response which then leads to some kind of behaviour that then reinforces the thought.
Think about it, it is kind of simple really. The bottom line is that it doesn’t take much for our thoughts to affect how we feel and ultimately affect our behaviour. Just think about the last time you procrastinated. What were you thinking? How did you feel at the time? What type of procrastinating behaviour do you demonstrate?
Overwhelm can really mess our day up!
So if you wake up and are experiencing overwhelm, then it is likely that your thoughts are telling you that you don’t feel adequate to do what you need to get done and chances are you are focusing on what you can’t do and I can tell you now that that is going to lead to you not feeling good and reaching for something that may be a more attractive option for wasting time.
I am not a fan of “Think it and be it” type of positive thinking but I do believe that we can find a truth in our situation that we can use to galvanise our engagement with the tasks ahead.
One useful thought may be “What CAN I do?” A useful question when thought from a place of curiosity rather than judgement. If we genuinely look at what we CAN do, realistic and achievable tasks that will eat into the mountain that is currently making us feel overwhelmed then that’s got to be a good option for getting onto the path of dealing with what is important to us and hopefully bringing about a sense of achievement.
If we don’t believe that we can do it then we may be deceiving ourselves and simply keeping ourselves stuck.
